Trump says US-China have ‘fantastic future’ as Xi warns against clash over Taiwan
US President Donald Trump has told Chinese President Xi Jinping he expects a “fantastic future together”, as his Xi spoke about the importance of avoiding a confrontation over Taiwan.
The comments came as Trump continued a three-day Beijing visit, the first trip by a US president to China in nearly a decade.
Xi warned that their two countries could clash over Taiwan if the issue is not handled properly, an unusually harsh admonition that stood in contrast to the American leader’s praise for his counterpart.
The exchange at a highly anticipated summit has underscored just how far apart Trump and Xi still are on thorny issues, including the war in Iran, trade disputes and the US’ relations with Taiwan, which is self-ruled but which China claims as part of its territory.
