Without Orbán in the way, EU rushes to pass new Russia sanctions | World News Tonight
Our main stories:
– EU MINISTERS TO DISCUSS MORE SANCTIONS ON RUSSIA
But we begin tonight in Brussels, where Europe’s foreign ministers are hashing out a sanctions package designed to hit Russia’s war machine, likely including its shadow fleet tankers and military industry. The talks are marked by a dramatic diplomatic shift with Hungary’s former Kremlin-friendly government led by Viktor Orbán no longer able to veto the EU’s proposals.
– UKRAINE: FROM WEAPONS’ RECIPIENT TO MANUFACTURING PARTNER
During his surprise visit to Ukraine, Germany’s defense chief Boris Pistorious described Berlin and Kyiv as “partners.” During the visit to the war-torn country’s capital he also put pen to paper on a deal to develop and produce drones together. The agreement comes as Finland’s top diplomat calls for Ukraine to be integrated into NATO as soon as possible.
– POLAND’S FORMER JUSTICE MINISTER ON THE RUN
Polish prosecutors are demanding an explanation from Washington over how a former Polish Justice Minister, Zbigniew Ziobro, wanted by local authorities, successfully travelled to the United States. The runaway politician faces major fraud charges from his time in office under Poland’s previous right-wing administration and had first fled the country for Hungary, where he was taken in by former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.
