An outlying island ferry crashed into a barrier at a typhoon shelter in Hong Kong shortly after midnight on Monday, May 11, 2026. Passengers described being jolted from their seats, and said they struggled to fetch their life jackets. They were left stranded on the sinking vessel, waiting for more than an hour to be rescued. The small crowd was on its way home on Mother’s Day and caught the last ferry to Mui Wo at 12.30am at the Central Ferry Pier 6. But some 25 minutes later, the First Ferry VI vessel crashed into the Hei Ling Chau Typhoon Shelter barrier. The rescuers arrived at about 2.10am, but did not bring the passengers back to Mui Wo Ferry Pier until about 2.30am.
