During his address to the US Congress, King Charles III made a lighthearted reference to a historic British tradition in which a Member of Parliament is symbolically held “hostage” at Buckingham Palace during the State Opening of Parliament to ensure the monarch’s safe return. He joked that today the “guest” is treated so well they often don’t want to leave—and playfully asked if there were any volunteers.
