Indonesia’s Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa floated the idea on Wednesday, suggesting that Jakarta could leverage its geographical position on the Malacca Strait, which connects the Indian and Pacific Oceans and carries more than 40 per cent of the world’s seaborne trade, for financial gain. He then quickly backtracked, saying “If only it could be like that.” The idea follows Iran’s move to impose a toll of up to $US2 million for ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
