A black panther cub was rescued from wildlife smugglers in northern Thailand.
The seven-month-old female was found crammed in a dirty cage in the back of an SUV in Tak province on April 8.
Police converged on the Burmese suspects, who were seen loading the caged animal into a waiting car at a shopping mall carpark in Mae Sot, bordering Myanmar.
Officers detained alleged traffickers Zaw Min Myat, 35, and Khin Thi Khaing, 23. They said they were paid 25,000 baht each by a woman named Mayu to deliver the baby panther to the notorious scam hub of Shwe Kokko in Myanmar.
They claimed they mistook the panther for a normal black cat. They were charged with ‘jointly possessing protected wildlife (black panther or leopard) without permission’.
Cops seized 1.3 million baht in assets, including two iPhones used to contact other smugglers, a Toyota Land Cruiser, a cage, and the panther cub believed to be worth around 540,000 baht.
Authorities said the arrest came following intelligence about an illegal wildlife delivery crossing through the Thai-Myanmar border. The network is said to involve members across Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam.
