SA Explained | The War Hits Here | 31 March 2026
The Iran-Israel-US conflict may be unfolding far from South Africa, but in this episode of SA Explained, Francis Herd and Aakash Bramdeo make the case that its consequences could land here in a big way. Francis opens with the key local hook: fuel prices are already rising, and what looks like a distant war is fast becoming a South African economic story.
Aakash describes the conflict in two words: expansion and intensification. He points to the uncertainty around the Strait of Hormuz, the threat of deeper US involvement, the Houthis entering the conflict, and Israel opening another front with Lebanon. The deeper concern is that there is still no clear endgame. Even if the US steps back, that does not mean the fighting stops, and it certainly does not mean oil pressure disappears.
From there, the episode brings the issue home. Aakash warns that if oil surges, ordinary South Africans could be hit through higher living costs, deeper debt pressure, weaker business performance, lower tax revenues and more strain on a state already carrying huge obligations. The conversation also turns practical: what should South Africans do if this becomes a long war, and what should the country be fixing now to build resilience?
This is not just a war update. It is an explainer about fuel, money, vulnerability and what a global crisis could mean for South Africans if it keeps dragging on.
