Israel’s parliament has passed legislation making the death penalty by hanging the default punishment for Palestinians convicted of nationalistic killings against Israelis.
The bill, long-sought by Israel’s far right, was opposed by both Israeli and Palestinian rights groups. The law is expected to be challenged through Israel’s Supreme Court.
Former executive director of Human Rights Watch and lawyer Kenneth Roth says the law is ‘blatantly discriminatory’ as it would only apply to Palestinians and not Israeli settlers. He says the law wouldn’t be applied with high standards of due process given it would rely on the military court system which he says is notorious for gaining confessions and evidence through mistreatment and torture.
