Trump and South Korea’s Lee ‘have a deal’ after White House meeting

US President Donald Trump struck a cordial tone in his meeting with South Korean President Lee Jae-myung on August 25, 2025, despite having made remarks hours earlier that threatened to undermine the talks. Trump highlighted South Korea’s key role in US shipbuilding, while asserting that Seoul needed US energy and military equipment. He added that he hoped to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un this year. Trump and Lee are expected to hold talks again later in the year in South Korea.
